“The best folktales have a dark edge. Conversely, the best folk art pops with colour … Sandra Dieckmann’s nature inspired illustration has got that elusive, comfortable yet disquieting quality in spades.” (Digital Artist Magazine)
I was mooching past Exeter’s No Guts No Glory store where I first noticed these kooky little animal illustrations grinning at me through the window. Upon pursuing this further I found that I had stumbled across some designs by freelance illustrator Sandra Dieckmann, who works from her London studio ‘Mama Wolf’. Along with winning numerous awards she has brought out a picture book and produced a range of Christmas cards, but my favorites have got to be the wallpaper designs produced for AREA (see below).
I can’t quite decide if the prints are all playful and whimsical, or whether some have a rather more sinister side, hinting at something darker. Almost like a visual version of Angela Carter’s gritty fairytales in The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories. Check out Dieckmann’s stuff and decide for yourself: http://www.sandradieckmann.com/
